Cranio-mandibular-joint physiotherapy

Updated: Apr 14

Cranio-mandibular-joint physiotherapy is an area of physiotherapy that focuses on the treatment of problems in the jaw and chewing apparatus. We at Physio Restart will be offering you specialised treatment from April on 2024. (book an appointment)

Jaw physiotherapy can cover a wide range of complaints, such as jaw pain, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ or CMD disorders), teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw muscle tension and difficulties with chewing or speaking. However, complaints unrelated to the jaw area, such as headaches, neck and back pain or even pelvic floor problems, can also be improved through jaw treatments.

Physiotherapists who specialise in jaw physiotherapy can use various techniques and approaches to alleviate symptoms and improve the function of the jaw and other affected joints. These include manual therapy, dry needling, stretching or strengthening exercises, postural changes, muscle relaxation techniques, adjustment of TMJ positions and possibly the use of specialised equipment such as splints or mouthpieces (the latter by a medical professional).

Treatment is often carried out in close collaboration with dentists, orthodontists and other specialists so that comprehensive care can be provided and the best results can be achieved for you.
